Gotta say, I totally adore the finale’s unique spin on the classic villain trope of the dying antagonist coming back to try to take the protagonist with them. As Goetia said, attempting to create a pyrrhic victory for the Chaldea Master by killing them before he dies too is completely out of character, and yet no other action could be so unflinchingly, unmistakably, human.
That supervillain trope is almost always used just for sheer dramatic effect; this is the first time I’ve seen it used to further the story’s theme of human lives being precious because they are limited. Goetia only understood humanity once he was facing his own death.
Mortality made him human when 3000 years of godhood could not, and all in the blink of an eye.
Goetia saw his death and understood, implicitly, that all a human really has left in their final moments is their pride, and it was time to die protecting it.
